Power amplification on the wheel
An external planetary gearbox supplements the axle drive with an additional transmission ratio directly on the wheel hub. It distributes the torque via planetary gears around a sun gear, resulting in a compact, power-splitting solution (see planetary gear principle).
This reduction ratio on the wheel increases the available torque on the wheel axle and reduces the load on upstream components such as cardan shafts or the main gearbox.
Integration and construction technology
For smooth operation, the planetary gears, ring gear, sun gear and housing cover must be precisely matched to each other. Seals, O-rings and cover seals ensure that the gear oil remains in the system and no leaks occur. Examples of O-rings, cover seals and shaft seals for planetary gearboxes are listed in workshop spare parts catalogs.
