The driveshaft transmits torque from the transmission to the drive axle, thereby enabling the vehicle to move. Through its joints, it compensates for vertical and angular movements between the transmission and the axle that occur during driving due to suspension movement and load changes.

The main components include the drive shaft, the universal joints (Cardan joints), a sliding sleeve for length compensation in many designs, as well as center bearings and joint washers. Wear parts such as universal joints and bearings are often available as repair kits.

Typical signs include vibrations that increase as speed rises, a clattering or knocking sound when starting off and during load changes, and metallic noises coming from the area around the shaft. This is often caused by a worn universal joint or center bearing.
