Dimensioning for continuous operation: The truck challenge
In trucks, the thermal load on the engine and transmission is many times higher than in passenger cars. Due to the high engine output, constant heavy loads and continuous operation over long distances, the oil cooling system is dimensioned as a high-performance component. Truck oil coolers must cool large volumes of oil effectively and quickly and are often integrated into the cooling water circuit (water-oil heat exchanger) or designed as separate, solid air-oil coolers. These coolers must not only stabilize the engine temperature, but often also cool the oil of the automatic transmission or the intarder/retarder (for wear-free continuous braking), which requires complex and efficient control of the heat dissipation.
Precision in pressure and tightness
The oil cooler acts as a critical interface between the oil and coolant circuits. In view of the high system pressures and large temperature differences, the individual parts – especially the seals, gaskets and connecting flanges – must be manufactured with absolute precision. A gasket failure can lead to catastrophic mixing of oil and coolant, resulting in serious engine damage. For this reason, care must be taken to ensure that the materials used for spare parts are highly resistant to pressure and temperature. Another key individual component is the oil thermostat, which regulates the oil flow to the radiator to ensure that the oil reaches the optimum operating temperature quickly, but never overheats.
Long-term reliability and ease of servicing
As reducing downtime in the fleet is crucial, the entire oil cooler system must be designed for durability and easy maintenance. This means that the cooling capacity of the replacement cooler must exactly match the vehicle manufacturer’s specification to ensure thermal reserves for use in hot climates. The availability of individual parts such as high-quality gasket sets and fastening bolts is economically relevant in order to be able to react quickly and cost-effectively in the event of a leak without having to replace the entire, often very expensive, radiator unit.
