The masterpiece of the clutch

The release bearing (also known as the central release) enables the engine and transmission to be separated when the clutch is actuated. It presses against the membrane of the clutch pressure plate and lifts it off the friction disk. This allows the engine to continue running while the gear is changed.

Material and precision

A release bearing must glide smoothly, work under varying pressures and withstand vibrations. The accuracy of fit to the axle, bore and guide is essential – as is the careful selection of the sliding layers and bearing designs.

What should you look out for when buying:

Extreme axial loads for truck clutches
In the truck sector, release bearings and concentric slave cylinders (CSC) are components that are exposed to extremely high axial forces compared to the passenger car segment. Truck clutches have to transmit torques of several thousand Newton meters, which requires a massive contact pressure on the clutch pressure plate. The release bearing must reliably absorb this enormous thrust force when the clutch is disengaged and transmit it against the rotating diaphragm. This requires not only an oversized and high-strength design of the bearing itself, but also perfect sealing to protect the internal lubrication and function against heat and contamination from the clutch housing.

Actuation and precision in automated systems
Due to the high actuation forces, clutch control in trucks is often pneumatic or hydraulic with pneumatic support. The central clutch release (CSC) integrates the master cylinder and the release bearing in one assembly, which increases the efficiency of the actuation. These components play a special role in automated manual transmissions (AMT), where the clutch is not actuated by the driver but by an electronically controlled unit. Here, the demands on the precision and durability of the clutch release are even higher, as it has to complete a large number of extremely fast and precise shift cycles over the entire service life of the truck without errors in order to ensure smooth gear changes.

Wear and maintenance safety
The release mechanism is typically a key wear part, the condition of which determines the reliability of the entire drivetrain. Incorrectly dimensioned or inferior bearings can quickly lead to seizure marks, overheating and total failure of the clutch. The choice of release bearings in OE or original equipment quality is therefore crucial in order to guarantee the long maintenance intervals of commercial vehicles. During maintenance, the entire actuation system, including the guide sleeves and connections, must also always be checked for proper function, as even minor deformations or manufacturing defects can lead to uneven pressure and thus to premature bearing damage.
