The special case for trucks: compressed air instead of hydraulics
While the wheel brake cylinder in its classic, hydraulic design (as described in the basic text) is mainly used in light commercial vehicles and older systems, the primary brake actuator in heavy goods vehicles is the air brake. The function of the wheel brake cylinder – namely the conversion of control pressure into a mechanical movement for braking – is performed here by the air brake cylinder (brake chamber). This robust component converts the pneumatic pressure that comes from the main brake valve into the massive mechanical force that acts on the brake calliper via the S-cam (in the case of drum brakes) or via linkages (in the case of disc brakes). The quality of its diaphragms and seals is critical, as air loss impairs the function of the entire brake system.
Integration of service and parking brake
A crucial safety aspect of truck brake cylinders is the integration of the parking and emergency brake function. This is achieved by the spring-applied brake cylinder, which combines two chambers: The service chamber is pneumatically controlled for normal service braking. The second chamber contains a strong mechanical spring which is automatically activated when the pressure drops (e.g. when the vehicle is parked or in the event of an air circuit failure) and locks the vehicle. The precise function of these spring accumulators is essential for compliance with legal safety standards in truck traffic.
Accessories and maintenance precision
The accessories around the truck brake cylinder, such as the push rod, clevises and fastening elements, must be able to withstand extreme tensile and compressive forces. As the brake cylinders are the only connection to the mechanical actuation of the brake, the utmost precision must be observed during assembly and maintenance. In particular, the exact length of the push rod and the correct adjustment of the brake linkage are crucial for a uniform braking effect on all axles.
