When the truck stops, the business stops
A breakdown on the highway is never just a technical problem – it is a logistical, financial and often also a legal one. Delayed deliveries, towing costs, downtime: The damage can quickly run into the thousands. The good news is that the most common causes of breakdowns in commercial vehicles are well known – and in many cases preventable with the right precautions.
1. tire problems
Tire blowouts and gradual loss of pressure are among the most common causes of punctures. This is often due to a lack of tire pressure control or driving for too long with worn tread. Recommendation: Check tire pressure before every long journey, measure tread depth regularly and replace tires immediately if they are damaged – not at the next service.
2. brake problems
Worn brake pads, defective brake lines or problems in the EBS system are not only a breakdown hazard, but also a safety risk. Brake components are among the most safety-critical parts of a commercial vehicle and should only be repaired with tested quality parts. Regular visual inspections at every service are mandatory.

3. battery failure
Particularly in the winter months, starting problems caused by weak or defective batteries become more frequent. Particularly affected: older vehicles with high power consumption due to cooling systems, auxiliary heating or telematics. Batteries should be checked at least once a year and replaced in good time if their capacity is diminishing – before they stop working at the service station.
4. lighting failure
A defective tail light or a failed brake light may sound harmless – but it is not only a risk of breakdown, but also a frequent reason for inspections and fines. Check lighting systems on trucks and trailers regularly, carry spare bulbs and have the entire wiring checked in the event of frequent failures.
5. engine cooling system problems
Overheating due to insufficient coolant, a faulty thermostat or a leaking radiator is particularly common in summer. The engine acknowledges this with overheating – in the worst case, with a major engine failure. Check the coolant level before every journey, check the radiator for leaks and replace the thermostat if suspected.
Prevention is cheaper than repair
Most of these breakdowns can be prevented by consistent maintenance and high-quality spare parts. FZB Fahrzeugbedarf stocks all relevant wear and spare parts for trucks and trailers – from brake components to lighting and cooling system parts.
