A question that every workshop knows

A truck is in the shop, and a replacement part is needed—and fast. There are two options on the table: the original part from the manufacturer and a less expensive aftermarket part. Which one to choose? Workshops face this decision every day, and it’s rarely as simple as it seems. With the right criteria, however, it can be made systematically and confidently.

What is the difference between original and replica parts?

Original parts – also known as OEM parts – come directly from the vehicle or component manufacturer or are manufactured on their behalf. They correspond exactly to the specifications of the original installation: same materials, same tolerances, same quality inspection.

Replica parts – often also referred to as identical or alternative parts – are produced by third-party manufacturers. The quality varies considerably: high-quality replica parts meet the same requirements as original parts, while cheaper variants may differ in terms of material or accuracy of fit.

Identical parts have a special status: they are often manufactured in the same factory as the original part, but bear a different brand. At FZB, such identical parts are clearly marked – an important orientation aid for the workshop.

When is the original part the right choice?

When it comes to safety-critical components, the general rule is: always choose an original part. Brakes, axle components, steering parts, and suspension components —precise fit and tested load-bearing capacity are non-negotiable here. Even for newer vehicles under warranty, it’s advisable to use genuine parts so as not to jeopardize warranty claims.

The same applies to parts that are difficult to access and take a long time to remove. A cheaper aftermarket part that fails again after a short time will end up costing more than the high-quality original.

When is a replica part useful?

For older vehicles where original parts are hard to find or disproportionately expensive, high-quality aftermarket parts can be an excellent choice. The same applies to less safety-critical wear-and-tear parts such as light bulbs, gaskets, or simple filter components.

The decisive factor here is the quality of the manufacturer. FZB Fahrzeugbedarf only stocks tested alternative parts from well-known manufacturers – and will advise you openly on which part is suitable for which application.
